341st Missile Wing

The 341st Missile Wing was started in 1942 as a B-25 Mitchell (medium) bomber unit in Southeast Asia during World War II. Tasked with bombing strategic locations, the wing’s squadrons often flew separately around Burma and China and pioneered the use of glide bombing which earned the wing a Distinguished Unit Citation. The wing deactivated in 1945. During the Cold War, the 341st reactivated to fly nuclear weapon-laden B-47E Stratojets against the Soviets. When the Stratojet was no longer needed, the wing was once again deactivated in 1961, but was almost immediately brought back as the 341st Strategic Missile Wing. This time the wing was charged with LGM-30A Minuteman missiles. The Minuteman missiles progressed rapidly, from the I to III model in just over 10 years, but soon was no longer needed and all systems were deactivated by 2008. The wing continues to maintain the disabled missiles and remains ready to serve at any time.
